In the not-so-distant future, the World of Two Moons has given rise to a space-faring human civilization. But what has happened to the elves? Have they all disappeared? At least one remains: the sly and sexy Jink, who can't remember what happened to all her kin, and whose extraordinary powers and big heart make her a hero. (Jink 1-12) The True Sons Nine hundred years have passed since the Shards war. "Abode," a term previously used only in passing, has become the official human name for The World of Two Moons. Abode is now a planet of space-faring humans, who are slowly colonizing their solar system. The elves and trolls have disappeared, and while there are myths and legends about them, only a handful of researchers and officials know that the “Sojourners” (the elves) were real. Abode is led by a single matriarchal world government which extends to colonies on several planets and moons of its solar system. A telepathic, reptilian alien race calling themselves the Neverending crash-lands on one of the planets and come perilously close to wiping out the Abodeans and their colonies. The human government calls on a telepathic/teleporting/shapeshifting woman named Jink to try to negotiate with the Neverending. Jink stops the war by sharing a terrible secret she knows about the Neverending with their God/Emperor. But Jink wipes her own memory clean of that encounter, then disappears. Forty years later, factions among both the Neverending and Abodeans want to restart hostilities. The Doma (head of the human government) attempts to bring Jink in to interrogate her and get her help. The boosted human telepaths (elite "jack-ups" called Black Snakes) they send after her merely annoy her, so the Doma tries a different tack: she sends Kullyn Kenn, a barely telepathic "tweak," to try to lure her into the open. Kullyn is told a government secret: that Jink is actually an elf, the last of her kind on Abode, and that she was first discovered when trying to steal elfin artifacts from a museum. Kullyn gets an artifact (the key pommel of Cutter's sword New Moon) to use as a lure. Although Jink is attracted to Kullyn and sleeps with him, she doesn't remember dealing with the Neverending, and is not interested in helping the humans. When Kullyn returns to Abode without Jink, he is sent as an ambassador to the Neverending, a probable suicide mission. Jink has followed him secretly, and stows away on his spaceship to help him. Jink saves the ship from being destroyed by a suicide-bomber from the human faction wanting to go to war again. Then she and Kullyn are dropped off on Outerreach, the outermost planet of the Abodean system, where the Neverending live. They are captured and brought to the God Emperor, who shares the Neverending's history with only Jink, telling her that after the entire race had to abandon its dead homeworld, its only mission was to conquer and colonize other worlds, by leaving one group on a world to conquer it then the rest traveling on. The mother ship holding the remaining Neverending had finally crash-landed on Outterreach. A faction called "True Sons" wants to return to the old warring ways because they found out that all Neverending children since the end of the Abodean war have been specially bred to be able to live with humans, which the True Sons feel is a betrayal of their purity. But the Emperor needs human help to repair their mother ship so that they are not confined to Outerreach and their race will be ensured continuance. He introduces Jink to Firstborn Newbreed, one of the new generation. He then shares with Jink the secret she had wiped from her memory 40 years ago, and tells her she must find True Holder, the leader of the True Sons, and share the secret with him to avert another war. But behind her back he asks the Doma to find and destroy the True Sons in exchange for having the next generation of Neverending come and live among the humans to secure lasting peace, and the Doma agrees. Jink and Kullyn find the True Sons, and Jink telepathically shares the secret with True Holder. She tells him that she was born on a spaceship (the Palace of the High Ones) which traveled from planet to planet. On one dead planet, she decoded a written history of a war there between the Neverending and the native race, which destroyed the entire planet and both races. The elves in the Palace then traveled to other planets the Neverending had colonized in order to tell them what had become of their brethren, but found that each one had also been destroyed. When Jink had originally shared this with the God Emperor 40 years ago, it convinced him that the same would happen here in the Abode solar system with the last of their race, and so he stopped the war. True Holder realizes how wrong he was. Then the Skyward (Doma's army) arrives and Jink wonders why they are there; True Holder explains that the Emperor is giving the True Sons the means to atone for their rebellion by dying honorable deaths. The Skyward kills all the True Sons (and tries to kill Jink), because the evil Black Snake Jerrod mind-controls the commander to order it. Jerrod also forces Jink to experience all their deaths through a mind-merge with them. Jink and Kullyn escape, Jink once again wipes her memory because of the traumatic mind-merge, and Kullyn leaves before she wakes up. Six months later, Kullyn introduces himself to Jink, who realizes that they'd been lovers during a time she wiped from memory. She then wipes his memory of her, so that they can start over again "with their hearts." Mindcoil Having helped avert war with the Neverending, Kullyn is now charged with escorting Firstborn. Because he's too truthful, Firstborn manages to create friction between Kullyn and his lover Tamia and, later, between Kullyn and Jink. Elsewhere, Jerrod and his fellow Black Snake Belroyd secretly attempt to channel the lurking dark power in the ruins of Blue Mountain, a restricted area. Although Jink chases them away, Jerrod is determined to get that power for himself, so he marshalls the other three Black Snakes of his generation. Successfully evading the older-generation Black Snakes, the five travel to Blue Mountain. The older Black Snakes, trying to find out what the younger generation is up to, plant a suggestion in Kullyn to travel to Blue Mountain. However, when he stumbles on the five younger Black Snakes, they employ him as a focus for their mental energy. His mental scream alerts Jink, who had been having a confrontation with Tamia that has started to turn into friendship. The two women head out to help him. Unfortunately, Jerrod has managed to contact the power--which has been hungry for an identity of its own. It takes him and the other Black Snakes over to become the serpentine energy being Mindcoil. It sends out an enormous pulse of mental energy that sucks in the minds of every intelligent being it meets, giving them terrible waking dreams, which lead to many deaths, including the Doma's, who dies in her sleep. The mysterious caretaker of Blue Mountain (who is revealed to be Egg), and the warrior Firstborn Newbreed, rescue Tamia and Jink from Mindcoil's mental attack and a physical attack by some humans it is controlling. The four of them continue towards Blue Mountain, determined to stop Mindcoil. The spaceships above Abode try to find out what has happened on the planet, and pinpoint the center of the energy wave at Blue Mountain. However, Mindcoil can sense their plan to blow up Blue Mountain, and sends a concentrated mental burst at them which makes them fight each other. Jink and her band see this as their one chance at freeing Kullyn and the others from Mindcoil and thus destroying it, since its power is momentarily depleted from making this concentrated attack out into space. Jink and Tamia enter Kullyn's mind and enable him to break free of Mindcoil. Since Kullyn was the catalyst, the Black Snakes are freed as well, and Mindcoil ceases to exist. All but Kullyn and one Black Snake voluntarily have their memories wiped by Jink. Kullyn, Jink and Tamia are now a "threesome" in love, and leave Blue Mountain together. Go to the next section
